Governor Appoints Spartanburg Leader to State Housing Board - 3/4/2008

[Columbia, SC] Governor Mark Sanford has announced the appointment of Mary L. Thomas of Spartanburg to the nine-member Board of Commissioners for the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority.
Thomas, executive vice president of the Spartanburg County Foundation, joined the organization in 1998. Through her experience in leadership, and management she quickly rose in the ranks of the Foundation. This followed over ten years as executive director of the Bethlehem Community Center. Thomas brings a strong background in organizational and community involvement skills to the Authority.
“I am delighted to serve as a member of the Board of Commissioners for the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority.  I believe that this work is critical to the citizens of South Carolina as we look for innovative ways to make housing affordable, decent and safe,” said Thomas.   “I look forward to the challenge and to contributing my time to make a difference for those who need it the most,” she added.
Thomas is a graduate of Winthrop University and has studied abroad through Lenoir-Rhyne College. Active in many professional and civic organizations, she is a member of the Mary Black Health System, Community Foundation Alliance of South Carolina, South Carolina Education Television Network Advisory Board and others. She is the recipient of many honors and awards including the prestigious 2006 Robert W. Scrivner Award for Creative Grantmaking given to her by the Council on Foundations.
The Authority’s Board of Commissioners establishes policy for the independent agency and oversees its operations.  Thomas’ term will expire in August 2010.
