South Carolina Housing Achievement Awards Presented at Statewide Affordable Housing Forum - 2/23/2010

[Columbia, SC] The South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority (SC State Housing) announced its annual Housing Achievement Awards today during the Palmetto Affordable Housing Forum held at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Five awards were presented in six categories to celebrate innovation, best practices, and excellence in the affordable housing arena.

The Town of Mt. Pleasant was recognized for the Organization Sector category; The Cottages at Longborough, Charleston, was honored in the Housing Development category; The Greenville Housing Fund was presented the Creative Partnership award; The Honorable Chandra Dillard, South Carolina Representative, District 23, Greenville County, was named Elected Official of the Year; and Hammond Grove Baptist Church in North Augusta, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year.

Authority staff developed the awards program to recognize prominent contributions to affordable housing for low- and low-to-moderate income South Carolinians. Nomination forms specified that entrants must have been instrumental in creating and supporting affordable housing, implementing housing-related programs, or helping find solutions for housing problems. Another stipulation of the awards program is that the work honored must have been performed in South Carolina to benefit South Carolinians.

T. Scott Smith, Chairman of the Board, SC State Housing, and Executive Director Valarie M. Williams, presented the awards. “South Carolina is a national leader in providing innovative solutions to affordable housing,” Williams said. “There are individuals and organizations throughout the state who consistently go the extra mile and make enormous impacts in their communities.” Master of Ceremonies Judi Gatson announced the winners’ accomplishments as Williams and Smith congratulated the winners. “We’re honored to be in your company and offer this recognition.  It’s gratifying to be able to pay tribute to your work in the business of making safe, decent, affordable housing a reality, not just a dream,” Williams said.
